Tesco has launched a UK-first pilot with GS1 UK and 10 suppliers, replacing traditional barcodes with next-generation QR codes on 12 own-brand meat and produce lines in select stores across southern England. These GS1-powered QR codes provide a unique digital identity for each product, capturing real-time data like use-by dates and batch numbers to improve accuracy, reduce food waste, and prevent sales of expired items. The trial—a supermarket innovation—also lays groundwork for future applications, such as linking to allergen information, sustainability credentials, recycling guidance, and supply chain transparency.
Isabela De Pedro, supply chain development & change director, Tesco, highlights benefits like enhanced supply chain traceability, compliance, shelf-edge communication, and customer engagement through dynamic product information. GS1 UK reports 11% of members already use QR tech, with 33% planning adoption within a year, driven by goals like new sales channels and compliance with evolving legislation. Iain Walker of GS1 UK hails the trial as a milestone, showcasing digital product identity’s potential to unlock commercial value and consumer trust in retail.
